I'm just wrapping up a TCP server written using OTP principles and I have been doing load testing today. I have run into a troubling problem where instead of returning {ok, Socket} gen_tcp:connect/3 returns {error,emfile} after hitting 249 active connections.
Now, I've looked into this, and found that the problem lies with my *nix system placing a limit of X number of file pointers per running process. I am somewhat familiar with the ulimit utility, and upping the limit using that doesn't solve the problem.
I am wondering if erl is running as some other user or some such problem. Any ideas? |

have you checked if the user has the right to up the limit? (/etc/security/limits.conf) Also perhaps add the ulimit command in the bin/start_erl script and see if it works.

| Yes. I did set the option (nofile) in limits.conf. Unfortunately, that had no effect. What a strange and frustrating problem. |

You probably need to start the erlang shell with:
erl -env ERL_MAX_PORTS 50000 |

| Thanks for the suggestion, but it's an OS level issue. The only real solution is to distribute your TCP server across multiple nodes on the same physical server (or not), or a custom kernel compile. |
