<  Erlang  ~  term_to_binary and ei patch to handle NEW_FLOAT_EXT?

I'm trying to use the "How to use ei to marshal binary terms" article on this webpage. I'm expanding on the concept to do more math functions using doubles. I'm having a few problems but I think it could be related to the issue of double still being encoded at term_to_binary time as a string? I have V5.6.4
