Hi Everyone,
As a good way of trying to boost the community activity other then forums I was wondering what kind of tutorials would you like to see? Basically I would probably be able to find some time now during the holiday and I already have a few tutorials in mind, e.g. explaining the OTP applications and release handling fit together (concepts) as well as how to set up target systems from scratch and some principals around that.
What are your ideas and thoughts on what you feel is missing?

What I would like to see are examples of A few(maybe 3) little servers(that interoperate) written in another language like c# or something, with an example of how one of the servers could be replaced by an OTP application and communicate with the other 2.
Im beginning to understand Erlang, but having trouble applying it without examples comparing between the way to do complex things in two different languages. |

Perfect Now I might have something to do during the holiday. I propose the following:
You create a C# server and specify a small protocol (Text based or other). It should be a very small protocol. After that we get the C# server we invite erlangers to write a server to communicate with it.
What do you say? I'm assuming it is a TCP/IP server... was that what you intended?

| I think what Erlang misses is better documentation, a bunch of beginners to advanced exercises. There are enough erlang projects in github and sourceforge if you want to develop servers, but the transition to get there from a beginner is difficult. |

Yes the documentation isn't very easy to use. The fact that it is in frames makes it annoying to get around also basic things like for example in http://www.erlang.org/doc/system_principles/system_principles.html at the top:
Code: erl understands a number of command line arguments, see erl(1). A number of them are also described in this chapter.
why is that not a link to erl(1)? Fixing this basic stuff would be the best thing to do IMHO |

I see your point about the documentation but this hardly something we will do here It would be up to the Erlang/OTP team at Ericsson to handle I guess.
Anyway just to let you know the erl(1) reference is for man pages, so if you are on a *nix system they sortof make sense... If you haven't installed the man pages and you are running e.g. Linux then I suggest you do that.
Download it here: http://www.erlang.org/download.html
But I see your point... maybe an email to the mailing list would make things a little better |
