I recently listened to an interview with Claes Wikström in which he said:
Quote: "The number of concurrent connections is definitely not limited by Yaws [an Erlang based web server], it is limited by the operating system."
I understand that because of Erlang's method for pseudo-concurrency, excellent concurrency can be achieved. But apparently this is impacted, at least to some degree, by the OS.
What operating system will provide the highest level of concurrency and performance when used with Erlang? |

Since you mention number of sockets, this particular aspect has been studied somewhat in http://www.erlang-consulting.com/erlangworkshop07/erlang10-hellstrom.pdf
In regard to processing concurrency, you would have to take into account multicore architectures and the ability of the operating system to support them. This is a moving target, and the limitations of the hardware architectures seem to play a greater role than the OS.
One might suspect that the environments available to the OTP team stand a better chance of doing well in performance tests. Suse Linux on x86 is a fairly safe bet at this time, although you can see in the README file for OTP which platforms the OTP team has at its disposal for testing. |

I installed open solaris 10 on my computer (AMD Phenom Quad Core) beliving it would be faster than my ordinary Ubuntu desktop edition, however that was not the case.
Probably it depends on what you test, I had server with 20k+ connected clients, measuring response times with a single ping/pong command. |
