I was first introduced to Erlang a year ago and feel in love with this seemingly unique language. However there seemed at the time to be a glass ceiling with regards to information, and I simply couldn't break through. Looking through the cookbook I'm starting to look at Erlang in different ways.
Ps, what's the general opinion of Joe Armstrong's new book. I managed to get the last one off the website. |

Hopefully it will explode with information about Erlang.
Regarding Joe's book I haven't looked at it yet more then the demo pages they offer and it seems cool but it also seem a bit beginners level which I guess is very good for people starting out with Erlang.
However I do think it gets way more advanced in the later part of the book.

Yeah, thanks!  Hopefully the writing in the wiki starts getting some momentum soon as well, our goal is to try and have one place for all tutorials/howtos/other docs from beginner to guru level.
I have the book but haven't read it that much. It is a beginners book, but there is some cool stuff in there and not just simple small examples but useful applications.
Which I really like. You get some perspective and see that the stuff you learn can be used for something useful, and getting to use new knowledge is the best way to get it to stuck.
And I think it takes you from beginner to a good level, depending on how good you do your homework of course 
And for to fill any gaps you have trapexit and you can always ask in this forum
I haven't read the final version (is it out?, time to check for an upgrade ) so I may have additional comments when after an upgrade and I had the time to properly read it. |

We have been talking about the need for a new book for over 7 years now. Either translating the French one or writing a new one. e.g. see

We all were in agreement that a new book published by one of the major publishing houses was one of the factors needed for an exponential increase in the users of Erlang users. Then, in March came the semi-official announcement of a badly kept secret (@ ETC, we had known about it for six months ): http://armstrongonsoftware.blogspot.com/2007/03/hasta-la-vista-baby.html
As Joe explains, it was a chicken and egg problem. There is no market, thus there is no need for a book... But to create a market, we need a book. The very same day the book got released as beta, hundreds of copies were sold. I spent some time this weekend looking at Erlang blogs, and there are hundreds of them speaking about Erlang, many of them pointing to the book. I've added some of the most interesting ones on http://planet.trapexit.org
So my view on the book? Great, now all we need five more of them and commercial support in palace and we will finally reach the users we have always been talking about

You all seem to be from london, do you all work for ericsson?
I've built an erlang HTTP proxy with full blocking and filtering as part of my course work so I'm slightly beyond beginner level. That said I think I will pick up the book when it's finally finished, as judging from the contents list, theres some very interesting topics covered.
As for this site, theres more resources and information here then I was able to final collectively anywhere else 6 months ago. This really is a very solid resource, and I will be sticking around.
As way of an introduction, I'm a computer and electronics engineer from trinity college dublin, about to start a PhD in software radio. |
